Can’t decide between a Caribbean Island and Mexico for your winter vacation? Forget the endless resort comparisons for a moment. These five questions will help you narrow down the destinations that actually suit your travel style, from Cabo’s lively coast to Jamaica’s quieter corners.
Every winter, the same conversation happens.
“I need a vacation.”
“Okay, where are you thinking?”
“Somewhere warm.”
Ah, yes. Somewhere warm. An incredibly specific destination located somewhere between Mexico and the entire Caribbean Sea. Excellent. That narrows it down to thousands of hotels and resorts, countless beaches, and at least three completely different versions of the vacation you think you want.
And listen, guilty as charged. I pretty much always want to go somewhere warm. Sometimes you’ve had enough of work, deadlines, and whatever fresh nonsense the universe has introduced this week. You just want sunshine, excellent food, and nobody asking you what’s for dinner. Fair enough. But “somewhere warm” tells me a general temperature ballpark. It tells me almost nothing about the actual vacation you’re imagining.
A beachfront suite in Cabo, a boutique villa in Jamaica, and a luxury resort along Mexico’s Riviera Maya can all deliver sunshine. The actual experiences, however, are wildly different. So before you open Expedia and start playing vacation roulette, let’s narrow things down a smidge. If you’ve read my Scientific Method of Trip Planning, you already know I have a thing about starting with better questions. Here are five specifically for your winter escape.
An important question, and I’m gonna need you to answer truthfully. Not as the imaginary version of yourself who wakes up at 6 a.m. to explore ancient ruins before dawn.
If your plan involves a gorgeous suite, several excellent restaurants, a spa, and spending most of your vacation horizontally, the resort itself might just be the destination. A thoughtfully selected adults-only all-inclusive in the Riviera Maya or a beachfront property in Negril could be exactly what you need.
But if you enjoy wandering through local neighborhoods, discovering restaurants, and occasionally getting lost somewhere interesting (within reason, please), the surrounding destination matters enormously. Curaçao, with its colorful Willemstad streets and independent dining scene, or the Riviera Maya, with its cenotes and nearby Mayan archaeological sites, offers plenty beyond the resort gates.
Neither approach is better. Just don’t pay for an incredible destination only to discover you’ve booked yourself into a resort that makes leaving unnecessarily complicated.

And I don’t mean whether your resort has a Mexican restaurant next to its Italian restaurant. I’m talking about experiencing the actual place you’ve traveled to.
The Riviera Maya offers access to Yucatecan cuisine, Mayan cultural heritage, and experiences you won’t replicate at the buffet. Curaçao brings its distinctive Dutch-Caribbean influences, colorful architecture, and interesting culinary traditions. Both reward travelers who like a little cultural substance with their sunshine.
But perhaps the destination’s culinary credentials aren’t your primary concern. Maybe you want excellent service, consistently good food, and no obligation to venture beyond your beautiful surroundings. That’s perfectly reasonable, too. In that case, we should be evaluating the resort’s dining program rather than choosing a country because it happens to have a celebrated food scene.
A luxury vacation doesn’t have to include cultural immersion, but if that’s important to you, it shouldn’t be an afterthought.
There’s a considerable difference between a destination where the evening is just getting started at 10 p.m. and one where the soundtrack is ocean waves and the occasional tree frog.
Cabo San Lucas knows how to make an entrance, with its marina, beach clubs, upscale dining, and nightlife. Aruba’s Palm Beach area offers another lively option, with restaurants and entertainment within easy reach. And Negril, while famously laid-back, has plenty of music, beach bars, and sunset gatherings for those who want a little social energy.
If that all sounds exhausting, consider Portland, Jamaica, where lush landscapes and intimate accommodations set a different tone. Or look at Grand Turk, away from its busy cruise-port area, for a quieter, less-developed island atmosphere.
One important distinction: the destination and the property aren’t always on the same wavelength. You can absolutely book a peaceful boutique hotel in a lively destination, or accidentally end up next to the entertainment stage when you were hoping for solitude.
Ask me how important that distinction is.
Because apparently, we’re all supposed to agree that every beach is paradise. I’m going to disagree.
Negril’s Seven Mile Beach offers long stretches of sand, beach bars, and those famously beautiful sunsets. Aruba has inviting sandy beaches with generally calmer swimming conditions along parts of its western coast. Curaçao is known for its smaller coves, with excellent opportunities for snorkeling and discovering a different beach every day.
Then there’s Cabo, where the dramatic desert-meets-ocean landscape is spectacular, but many beaches aren’t safe for swimming because of strong currents and shore breaks. A fabulous oceanfront suite doesn’t necessarily mean you can stroll into the water outside your room. Important information if swimming is half the reason you’re going.
And if you’d rather swap the busy beach-club scene for a quieter setting, Grand Turk or Jamaica’s Portland parish may be worth a closer look.
Your preferred beach isn’t a minor detail. It can eliminate several otherwise appealing resorts immediately.

A romantic getaway, birthday celebration, friends’ trip, and anniversary vacation might all qualify as “somewhere warm,” but they don’t necessarily belong in the same destination.
Cabo can be a strong contender for travelers combining golf, sophisticated dining, spa experiences, and nightlife. The Riviera Maya offers flexibility for couples or groups balancing resort relaxation with cultural excursions. Aruba provides a mix of beaches, dining, and activities that can work for travelers with different interests.
The bigger consideration is whether everyone is imagining the same vacation. One person wants an oceanfront spa. Another wants excursions. Someone wants five-star dining, while somebody else is perfectly happy eating tacos in shorts every night.
Everybody says they’re flexible until the itinerary arrives.
The right destination needs to accommodate those differences without turning the vacation into a series of negotiations.
Still wondering whether the Caribbean or Mexico is better for your winter vacation? Here’s where I’d start narrowing the possibilities.
| YOUR VACATION PRIORITIES | DESTINATIONS WORTH CONSIDERING |
|---|---|
| Nightlife, golf, upscale dining, dramatic scenery | Cabo San Lucas |
| Mayan heritage, cenotes, food, resort choices | Riviera Maya |
| Sandy beaches, sunsets, easygoing atmosphere | Negril, Jamaica |
| Nature, intimate accommodations, seclusion | Portland, Jamaica |
| Quiet beaches, historic island character | Grand Turk |
| Beautiful beaches, restaurants, social atmosphere | Aruba |
| Colorful culture, food, varied beaches | Curaçao |
| Diving, marine life, outdoor exploration | Bonaire |
These aren’t definitive matches, just promising places to start. The actual property, location, flight connections, travel dates, and budget will further refine the shortlist. If Mexico made your shortlist, my roundup of six adults-only all-inclusive resorts is a good place to explore what different resort experiences could look like. And there are plenty of other contenders… St. Lucia, Antigua, Barbados, and Belize, to name a few. We’ll explore some of those in future posts.
You don’t need to know exactly where you want to go before we talk. That’s part of the fun of working together. But knowing whether you’re dreaming of Cabo’s beach clubs, Curaçao’s colorful streets, or a quiet corner of Jamaica gives us something far more useful than “somewhere warm.”
If you’re still figuring out what kind of vacation fits your current season of life, start with my Vacation Clarity Guide. And when you’re ready to turn those preferences into a real trip, that’s exactly why the Rose Bloom Travel consultation exists. We’ll sort through the possibilities, evaluate the details that matter, and find the destination and accommodations that make sense for you.
Because the goal isn’t to come home saying, “Well, at least the weather was nice.”
Consider the resort experience, access to local culture and dining, nightlife, beach characteristics, and who you’re traveling with. Both regions offer a wide variety of vacation styles, so choosing a specific destination and property matters more than deciding between the Caribbean and Mexico broadly.
Cabo combines dramatic desert-and-ocean scenery with golf, upscale dining, and lively nightlife. Riviera Maya offers Caribbean beaches, cenotes, Mayan archaeological sites, and a broad selection of resorts. Some Cabo beaches are unsafe for swimming, so check beachfront conditions when choosing accommodations.
Consider Portland, Jamaica, for its lush scenery and boutique accommodations; Grand Turk for quieter stretches of coastline away from the cruise center; or Negril’s West End for intimate cliffside properties.
A resort is generally better if you want to settle into one location and enjoy its amenities. A boutique ocean cruise can be a better fit if visiting multiple destinations without repeatedly changing hotels appeals to you. The choice depends on your preferred travel style.
Grand Turk offers historic character and quieter beaches, Bonaire appeals to diving and nature enthusiasts, and Curaçao combines colorful architecture, excellent beach variety, and a distinctive culinary scene.
